Thank you for giving this article a chance. I agree code-switching is a survival technique and those who can master it, tend to get ahead.
A few months ago, one of the women from the podcast, Tea with Queen and J shared that she grew up in an all-Black school, went to an HBCU, and now works as an HR Director in a mixed race office. She talked about how in college and her work life, people pressured her to code-switch for success and she never did, but she still succeeded. I think stories like hers are important cause then we have to think about what success is and if assimilation is necessary for survival.
While I’m grateful for those before me who denied parts of themselves for survival, I have the space where that’s no longer necessary. And I think it’s important to give children that space as well.
